| Kerry Miles |
July 24, 2006Though his summer internship is almost over, it’s clear that Kerry Miles has relished being a member of the Fiducial team. He came aboard June 5 and completes his stint with the financial services department in early August when football practice begins at Towson University in Towson, MD.
Miles has impressed his superiors at Fiducial with his energy and enthusiasm for getting the job done.
“Kerry has been a great intern,” said Karen Beech, president of Fiducial Investment Advisors, Inc., based in the company’s Technical and Administrative Support Center (TASC) in Columbia, MD. “He’s become an integral member of our team. He has taken the initiative to clean up all of our files and has reorganized a large part of our offices. Kerry performs every task he’s given with a positive attitude and a smile.”
In addition to filing and straightening out the financial services office, Miles has also taken care of some bookkeeping tasks, putting together spreadsheets and even running a few errands.
“I enjoy working in the back office and like the idea of getting to know the ins and outs of the company,” said Miles. “I’m not a financial advisor but I’m able to see what goes on.”
A former computer science major, Miles is now studying business administration with a concentration in finance.
“It deals with numbers and it fits me better,” he said.
Kerry Miles is off and running for the Towson University Tigers. The senior tailback served as a summer intern in Fiducial’s financial services department at the company’s Technical and Administrative Support Center (TASC) in Columbia, MD. |
With his internship drawing to a close, he says it’s been a valuable experience. At this point, he’s not sure whether he would like to be a financial representative one day or work in the back office for a future firm.
Follow your dream but have a back-up
Planning to graduate in spring 2007, Miles knows there’s no substitute for giving any endeavor less than your best effort, whether it’s serving an internship or playing football.
“Whatever you do you have to work hard at it and have to know what you’re doing in order to be successful,” he said.
Miles hopes to make a strong showing in pre-season camp while preparing for his senior year for the NCAA Division I-AA squad that plays in the Atlantic 10 Football Conference. He sat out spring practice sessions with a broken right hand that’s now fully healed and says he’s ready to go. In the Tigers’ pre-season profile, Miles is viewed as a strong contender for the starting tailback position. He’s described as one of the team’s best-conditioned athletes and a hard worker in the weight room.
Second in rushing for the Tigers in 2004, Miles gained 352 yards on 92 carries including a team-leading seven touchdowns. He has 16 career touchdowns and has demonstrated a knack for getting six points from close range.
“Kerry’s a great kid and very tough inside the five-yard line,” said Peter Schlehr, assistant athletic director/athletic media relations director at Towson University.
Drawing a comparison between carrying the football and working in financial services, Miles noted that “a tailback has to dig for every hard that he gets” while a financial advisor has “to keep plugging away [to help clients].”
Despite being considered too small by National Football League combine scouts, the 5-11, 200-pounder still dreams about playing in the NFL. But Miles tempers that dream with a dose of reality that every small business owner should heed.
“You have to follow your dream but you have to have a back-up plan,” he said.
